Congratulations to the winners, thanks to those who have recently joined, and a plea to anyone yet to participate, to contact Richard and join up and help support the Parish funds (rg.osborne777@gmail.com). This would be at a proportionate amount for the remainder of 2024.  Please also note that the 100 Club renewals for 2025 will be due at the end of the year and a reminder will be issued. Thanks as ever to Richard for running the 100 Club.

2.     Financial Update from our Treasurer, John Moore

Following discussions at past public meetings the finances of WPM are split into various 'funds'.

The proceeds of the 100 Club are designed to offset the costs of insurance for The Green and any administration expenses (eg hiring of Hall for meetings). This approach has worked again this year but with the rising costs of insurance, sales of 100 Club balls will need to at least remain at current

levels for next year. Grass cutting expenses are met entirely from voluntary donations. At least £200 will be needed next year as the fund of previous donations is now exhausted.

Contributions earmarked for environmental improvements are still available. This year they have paid for a replacement hover mower, on-going bench maintenance and pending spring bulb planting.

The proceeds of the annual BBQ are held to offset the future costs of replacing the defibrillator equipment. Finally, there is an unallocated balance of approximately £250 arising from previous social events (eg Safari Supper).

Looking ahead therefore the level of support for the 100 Club plus voluntary donations towards grass cutting will be critical to sustaining the current level of WPM activity.

3.     Social Events

A quiz night for all residents in Holmedale, planned for Saturday 28th September in Dalton & Gayles Village Hall, was cancelled due to a low response for tickets. We would like to organise further social events, but we need to know what you’d like ……. Do let me know.

Thanks to Kathryn we will of coure hold our annual BBQ in July next year.

4.     Biodiversity Projects

4.1 Whashton Parish

Plans for maintenance of the Village Green including grass cutting and re-wilding of a number of areas were issued to all residents on 3rd October.  Spring bulbs have been purchased and will be planted in due course. Sally & Tad will be monitoring and cleaning out the nest boxes ready for winter roosting and in preparation for nesting in the Spring. There is always a pressing need for additional volunteers so please get in touch if you are able to help in any way.

4.2 Holmedale Nature Network

The Holmedale Nature Network (HNN) connects the parishes of Barningham, Newsham, Dalton, Gayles, Kirby Hill, Ravensworth, Whashton, Gilling West, Aske and Skeeby with the aim of nurturing nature and improving biodiversity across our Dale.  We are still building our organisation to meet the Charity Commission’s requirements for a new Charitable Incorporated Organisation.

The HNN has been very busy during the Summer with many activities across our Dale, including a family nature day, tackling Himalayan Balsam, undertaking nature surveys, and participating in a UK-wide water quality testing initiative. All of these events are detailed in the latest HNN Newsletter….  www.whashtonparish.co.uk/holmedale

The following activities will take place in October & November:

Fabulous Fungi, Science, Fiction, Facts, Forays and Fun, a light-hearted but fact-filled talk by Catherine Gillie, a member of the North East Fungus Study Group for over 25 years.  At the end, you’ll have an opportunity to try to identify fungi from smells.

5.     Planning Applications

A number of proposed developments in Whashton are at various stages, including Whashton Farmhouse, Whashton Farm Buildings, Rose Cottage and Cherry Tree Cottage. Further information is

available on North Yorkshire Council's Planning Portal……. www.northyorks.gov.uk/planning-and-conservation/view-and-comment-planning-applications

Whashton Parish Meeting Committee continues to seek assurance from the Planning Department and Highways North Yorkshire that Construction Management Plans for the proposed developments will be coordinated, to minimise disruption.

6.     Highways

Now that Autumn is upon us, the risk of flooding, blocked drains and gullies, fallen branches, etc has increased, as we’ve all seen recently. Please note that should any such problem be seen, please report it to North Yorkshire Council through their website….. www.northyorks.gov.uk/roads-parking-and-travel/roads-and-pavements

7.     Thanks for Support

There are many residents who contribute to our community, including those who maintain the Village Green, manage the Biodiversity Projects, administer the financial affairs and the website, run the 100 Club and Social Events and much more – thank you Sally, Rachel, Tad, Janet, Alan, Richard, Ady, Norman, Jonathan, Rob, Hazel, Trevor, Lizzie…. Apologies if I’ve missed anyone !

THANK YOU ON BEHALF OF ALL OUR RESIDENTS

There remains a vacancy for a Parish Clerk and I would urge someone to take up this important role.

Finally, thanks to Hazel for this stunning photograph of the Northern Lights over Whashton taken last week……

Do send any photographs that you’d like to feature in future Newsletters together with any further information you’d like including …..or just let me know that you’ve read it.
